Directory of STEM & Mastodon Instances

I've started a directory of STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] and medical mastodon instances - mainly English language. Here's the link to the Google spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hZz1FB2HP-nqXNHigaiExFWvWTkMJ-TwYJa8W3Pdh-Q/edit?usp=sharing

If you want to add to the form either request permission to edit through the form or you can message me:

http://zeroes.ca/@Rhyothemis

I also have a list of Mastodon / FediVerse STEM and medical hashtags:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Alc8MlwDCziS6Z-CFij5A6A1MKQtGYTeO--xfW1vl6A/edit?usp=sharing

It's a shame what's happened with Twitter - it was great tool for rapid science communication and SciComm in general. I'm hoping more researchers find a new home in the FediVerse and make liberal use of hashtags so as to avoid siloing of information.

The Nervous Heart video lecture notes

Dr. Crystal Ripplinger 5:40 nerve:myocyte ratio similar to capillary myocyte ratio; all myocytes in ventricular myocardium are in contact with at least one neuronal process     6:27 more nerves at base of heart than apex, more sympathetic in epicardium, more parasympathetic in endocardium   11:15 how sympathetic nerve loss contributes to arrhythmia post-myocardial infarction (heart attack) 12:52 heterogeneity in innervation can be arrhythmogenic   13:02 nerve loss, lack of norepinephrine can lead to beta adrenergic receptor hypersenstitivity & supersensitive response to neurotransmitters     14:03 Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) inhibit sympathetic regeneration after infarction, also prevent spinal cord regeneration   20:22 localized lesioning with anti-DBH-saporin; anti-dopamine beta hydroxylase antibody conjugated to toxin that gets into cell via synaptic vesicle   28:30 differences between larger animals (rabbi...

Binding of SARS-CoV-2 to ACE2 does not affect ACE2 enzymatic function

Image
The Biochemical Society posted a recording of a fascinating webinar titled ACE2: Friend or Foe. I have indexed the third portion, a talk by Prof Michael Bader on the non-enzymatic functions of ACE2. I hope to index the other portions soon. Highlights:  - ACE2 enzymatic function is not affected by SARS-CoV-2 binding. Dr Roger Seheult, a pulmonologist, and others have proposed what I thought to be a quite plausible hypothesis that loss of ACE2 function due to SARS-CoV-2 binding results in high levels of oxidative stress which in turn causes hypercoagulability and attendant pathologies. Loss of ACE2 activity may be occurring due to reduced ACE2 transcription, however [ see previous post on this ]. - Vascular pericytes are potential targets of infection (very interesting, IMHO) - AT2 pneumocytes are targets of infection in lung tissue - loss of ACE2 results in reduced tryptophan uptake due to loss of amino acid transport function > reduction in serotonin production > loss of exe...

Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Associated with Reduced Mortality / Respiratory Diseases and Aquaporins, ENaC & PON1

Image
The eat 'five a day' (referring to servings of fruits and vegetables) recommendation of the World Health Organization and many national health agencies has new support based on findings by Wang et al. (2021) from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.   - link to open access article: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.120.048996 The study found a reduction in all-cause mortality as well as reductions in mortality due to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The thresholds for reductions in mortality were achieved at two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day. No additional benefit was seen for over five servings. Sadly, there was no significant reduction found for neurodegenerative diseases (but see the Michley et al. (2017, open access) study on Parkinson disease re: fresh vs. canned/frozen). Wang et al. (2021) Above is Figure 1 from Wang et al. (2021); it is quite small and th...

Glucose - effects on survival in Listeria and influenza infection
